Chairman’s Chat

The start of a New Year is always an exciting time, this year particularly as we have the Queen’s  Diamond Jubilee and the Olympic Games, let us hope that it also proves to be an exciting year for Henbury Golf Club.

We must welcome the large number of new Members in to the club, and trust that they will enjoy the benefits that are available to them .

The Pro Shop has undergone a complete refurbishment and Nick is looking for support from us all to ensure its success.

Around the course the Greens staff are very busy with improvements and    alterations for the coming season to enhance our enjoyment.  All we need to do now, certainly in my case, is to improve our game.

Greens Winter Update

We have been lucky with a mild winter this season and therefore the course has only been closed on a few occasions and a greater number of golfers  have    enjoyed the course. Credit must go to Gary and his team for keeping the greens in great condition. When other courses in the area have temporary greens and holes closed we sometimes forget how fortunate we are to be playing week in week out on our main greens.

As well as the general upkeep of the course the greens staff have been involved in a number of projects over the winter. These include:

The removal of the mounds and a new bunker on the 9thhole

New drainage for the 3rdgreen

Levelling of the tees on the 7thand rebuilding of the bridge

Raising the base of the bunkers on the 2ndand 18th

A new AstroTurf path at the back of the 8thgreen

They have also commenced work on the first phase of developing the           short -game practice area to the right of the 2ndfairway. Initially this involves   smoothing out the ridge to the right of the practice green to allow the practice of chip and run shots and the development of a new bunker to practice longer bunker shots.

The 14th, 15thand 16thfairways have been a long term concern for the club. There is very little soil on this area of the course with rock being very close to the  surface and the fairways burn off quickly in the summer. There are a number of options for the club to tackle this issue however they come at an expense. We are currently exploring a cheaper solution and being the smallest fairway the 16this being used as a guinea pig. In the Autumn it was hollow tined, top dressed and over seeded. The moss will then be killed off in the spring,       combined with more top dressing and seeding. If this has the desired effect this can then be repeated on the 14thand 15th.

On my last note I know there always ongoing grumbles and concerns and     everyone will have differing opinions on improvements that can be made. We are always receptive to any ideas and whilst I can’t promise all suggestions will all be actioned please feel free to email me at henburygreens@me.com.
